Haiti's Powerful Earthquake
Port-au-Prince - An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale rocked Haiti. This major earthquake caused panic and massive devastation in the country located in the Caribbean sea, including the Presidential Palace.
"I think this is truly a disaster with a large proportion," ujat Haitian Ambassador to the United States, Raymond Alcide Joseph, told television station CNN as reported by AFP on Wednesday (13/01/2009).
All communications systems on the island after an earthquake shook disrupted. Have not known the victim was killed or wounded by this disaster.
Tsunami warning for the Caribbean region had issued at 21:53 GMT, shortly after the earthquake. An eyewitness said the ground had shook for more than a minute. And subsequent aftershocks hit barrage.
In the capital Port-au-Prince, local media reported the Presidential Palace, Parliament building, the church building and several other government buildings suffered serious damage.
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said this massive earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter Scale occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Its center located at the distance of 16 kilometers from the capital Port-au-Prince and 27 kilometers from Petionville, Haiti's countryside. (NVC / NRL)
